What is the definition of epic in games?

What is the definition of epic in games?

I am trying to make my game more epic, since I believe that epic moments bring amazement to players and therefore more fun.
Epicness in games, in my books, are best shown in following scenes:

The last image, showing the awesome scene were Leonidas charges against the Persians is obviously not from a game. But still, such scenes would make an epic effect in a game.
So regarding that, I think that epicness derives from scale-comparisons, super-risky actions in slow-motion or violence shown in abstract art.
That said, I also think that this scene from Super Mario Bros for the Wii U looks epic as well:

You could say that it's the scale-comparison in the background that's doing the epic-work, but I would also say that the powerful colors in this scene contribute to this scene's epicness.
So, what is it, that every player from casual to hardcore would sense as epic? No matter if on mobile platforms or on maxed-out PCs? What's the formula of epicness?
